Facebook Launches Facebook Platform

TechCrunch just wrote that Facebook is opening up their API to any third party developer who is so inclined. This is an interesting development and, as the post writes, is a dividing point between Facebook and MySpace. Facebook’s move will undoubtedly add plenty of functionality as new applications are brought online. The question however is will the quality of those application, not under the Facebook’s control, bring down the overall quality of the service?

MySpace on the other hand seems to be taking the Apple approach and keeping their system closed. This keeps control in the hands of Newscorp, but also may deny its user new features in a timely matter. Which system is better? There is no clear answer, and it usually depends on your personal preferences. In the end the decision will be made in favor of one company or the other by the number of users who sign up for their services.
